q. Does your editorial writing sound like you? In what ways might you successfully communicate your opinions and ideas?

As of right now the editorial isn't even really beginning as I am still doing research and reading articles based on different ideas that I may want to follow through. I want to keep my writing informal as I think it communicates to audiences better when they are able to relate to the writing and not put in too much effort to read it. I want my images to incorporate colourful styling for sure as I want this project to be image heavy.

q. Are you identifying diverse & innovative fashion design references to make your ideas relevant & reflective of emerging trends and ideas?

In terms of fashion, I think I will be sticking to fashion that is trending on 'white girl ticktok' such as coloured tights and ballet core but also adding indian clothes into the mix to show the progressiveness of the editorial. I think I will include references of relevant South Asian designers in the editorial writing but the styling will remain an 'indowestern' trendy.

q. Why do you personally feel it is important to promote the theme you have chosen? What does your voice represent in relation to that theme?

I have come to realise I have a passion for bringing attention to Indian media and creatives that isn't written or created by foreigners. why is slumdog millionaire the greatest portrayal of India in Hollywood? In trying to find myself in this space, and finding a lack instead, I couldn't help but notice; why aren't we seeing more South Asian women as we scroll through Instagram, scour catwalks or flick through the pages of magazines? And is the inclusion of a diversity hire really our end goal?

It's important to recognise that South Asians have a need for representation, but not representation as a part of a western narrative to add profit to an industry. Our stories and beauty, shown and directed through an authentic lens, not swayed by stereotypes. People must see more of South Asia through the eyes of someone with lived experience within the culture. This part of the continent has had so many ships crashing into it for the sake of colonialism, that its population today boasts a varied and striking array of physical characteristics —from coarse waves to sleek tresses and high, chiselled cheek bones to rounder features. Why is this broad spectrum of beauty so untapped by the fashion world?

q. How might you develop the visual aspect of your publication?

I will focus on styling brightly coloured tights and further see if I can find a way to create powerful images incorporating South Asian skin tones and features as the main focus. I think the main problem I face is with casting as most of my friends have modelled for me already and I don't want repetition.
