Peter Cat Recording Co. are five dudes from New Delhi who look like an indie band but, somehow, sound like Dean Martin. They are, probably, the best band you’ve never heard.

Peter Cat Recording Co. or PCRC is based between New Delhi and San Francisco, currently consisting of 4 members. Formed in 2009, it was initially a solo project started by Suryakant Sawhney in San Francisco and eventually blossomed into a full blown band/act. The type of music they play is open to discussion, with some people saying they sound like post depression era cabaret to the Bangalore Times calling them Experimental Dark. Their style ranges from Gypsy Jazz, dizzyingly plethoric experimentation, to Ballroom Waltz to Midnight Moonlight car chase music (think the movie Don). The sound is inspired by 60s/70s Bollywood music, which was in turn inspired by American music of the 50s, such as big band music and soul. Lyrically, they choose to write about prostitutes, deception, android artists and films coming to life.

'Bismillah', arguably their breeziest and most accessible album yet, is juxtaposed by heavy, impressionistic undertones of melancholia, cynicism, guilt, and socio-political commentary in the lyricism.

In terms of photography; the location of the music video is an actual wedding of one of the band members. It is equal parts staged and authentic. Weddings hold a place of nostalgia for most Indians as they are a time to get together with family members and simply just enjoy. I think this video captures stills of the attendees in a moment entirely their own; except for that it is now shared with the camera. (I took screenshots of the music video to explain what I meant in the last line.) It also holds elements of our project brief, such as showing a stark contrast. A beautiful and romantic wedding goes on in the background while the groom (the singer) croons lyrics of guilt 'all I wanna be ..ha, is something so good, something so good, something so real' .
