a world without sound.

We were given ‘a world without sound’ and asked to explore and develop a broadcast of our reaction to this world. While we discussed, a lot of diverse and valid points were brought up, which reflected the diversity of our group. Initially we had the idea of a silent film where many of the meaningless and largely unnoticeable noises that we hear in every day life would be made obviously absent. For example, the crunching of a crisp packet, the simmering of a boiling pan, running water or laughter. We then reached a block when we realised that there would still experience language barriers and how they would act as an obtrusion to communication. I liked the idea of using body language to communicate but also the concept of carrying a pack of cards with you that contained simple prompt questions such as ‘how are you’ and ‘have you eaten’ to communicate with each other in a soundless world but I wanted to explore the boundaries of language. As the class is largely international and multilingual, everyone in my group spoke a different language and so I suggested we write our prompts in our own languages and attempt to communicate to show how even without sound, words are not always a solution. I found this to be an interesting activity that also made me think about the diversity within our class.
